Lorraine Esterline (Brown) Peery

June 19, 1927 — February 28, 2016

Lorraine Esterline Brown Peery was born on June 19, 1927 to parents Mrs. Zeola Froe Brown and Mr. George R. Nance. She graduated from Genoa High School, Bluefield, West Virginia, in 1944 as Valedictorian of her class. In 1948, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Bluefield State College, with a major in Mathematics. On August 2, 1947, she was united in Holy Matrimony with Charles R. Peery, Jr. and to this union was born two children, Charles R. Peery, III and Carol D. Peery. Lorraine taught Mathematics in the school systems of Georgia and Virginia for a period of three years. In 1952, she moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she and her husband established their residency. In 1956, she was hired by the Columbus Public Schools as a teacher of Mathematics at East High School. In 1961, Lorraine received her Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from The Ohio State University and later completed her course work for her Principal’s Certificate from The Ohio State University. She worked in the CPS system for a period of twenty-nine years (1956-1985) as a Math teacher at East High, a Guidance Counselor at Monroe Junior High and an Assistant Principal at Eastmoor and Northland High Schools. Lorraine was a member of the Bluefield State College Alumni, The Aesthetics Club, The Victory Matrons Club and The Esse Quam Videra Club. She was also a loyal member of Asbury United Methodist Church, an Elder at the Broad Street Christian, Disciples of Christ Church and was mostly recently a member of the Christ United Methodist Church. In addition to her family, her second greatest love was for her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Lorraine was a Life Member and a Golden Soror and was never inactive from the time of her initiation in 1945. She held many offices such as Basileus and Dean of Pledges, among others. Lorraine was instrumental in chartering the Lambda Mu Chapter at Miami University, in which her daughter is a Charter Member. On February 28, 2016, at the age of 88, Lorraine departed this earthly life while at The Ohio State University Medical Center East. In addition to her loving parents, Lorraine was preceded in death by her beloved husband of more than 38 years, Charles R. Peery, Jr., her loving brother Harrison Brown, and her nephew Lawrence Brown. Lorraine leaves to mourn her passing a devoted son, Charles R. Peery, III; a devoted, loving and caring daughter, Carol D. Peery Ayers (Randy); four grandchildren, Charles Roscoe IV and Charlind Alexis Peery, Ryan Vincent and Cameron Alexander Ayers; one great grandchild, Charles Roscoe Peery, V; niece Bonita Brown; and nephew Harrison Brown, Jr. In addition, she leaves behind many good friends and former students. Lorraine was truly loved by all!
