Luther Arnold Mance, Sr. was born on April 7, 1931 to Juanita Combs Mance and Edward Mance, Sr. in Short Creek, West Virginia. Luther, or “Lou” as his family and close friends knew him, served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a skilled marksman and qualified for the designation of Sharp Shooter. Lou traveled for two years with the Indianapolis Clowns and the New York Black Yankees and was a member of the Negro Baseball League Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Missouri. He retired from the State of Ohio, where he was employed as a Corrections Officer for many years. He was also an avid golfer. Lou passed away on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at The Ohio State University East Hospital. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 48 years, Cora Alice Mance, both his parents, four siblings including his brother Edward Mance, Jr. and sisters, Mary Catherine Treadway, Shirley Ann Berry, and Fuchi Garnet Combs, and most recently his nephew Allen (Jan) Langston, who passed away just days earlier. He leaves to celebrate his memory, two sons Luther Mance, Jr. and Barney Mance; one daughter Denise (Ernest) Allen; granddaughters Ashley Mance and Brittany Mance; grandsons Ricky Jackson, Jr. and Darius Mance; great grandchildren Kameron and Taylor Childs; a brother-in-law James Berry; nephews, James (DeeAnn) Berry, Jr., Jeffery (Sherry) Berry, and John Pitts; nieces Jaime Berry and Jackie Berry; great nieces Jereco Berry and Gabrielle Berry; great nephews Joshua Berry and Noah Berry; his special extended family, the Wednesday Retiree Group, and a host of other relatives and friends. Celebration of Life 10 a.m., Friday, September 17, 2010 in the chapel of DIEHL-WHITTAKER FUNERAL SERVICE, 720 E. Long Street, where the family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the start of service. Interment Arlington Field of Honor.
