Mackoline Brooks

August 11, 1944 — March 7, 2019

Mackoline “Mac” Brooks was born August 11, 1944 in Holly Grove, Arkansas to McKinley, Sr. and Burnice Mitchell. She answered the call of her Heavenly Father on March 7, 2019 at Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio. Mac graduated from East High School in Columbus, OH in 1962. She began her college education at The Ohio State University and later went on to receive her BA in Education from Ohio Dominican College and her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Kent State University. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc and retired from Columbus City Schools after serving over 37 years as a librarian. Mac loved the Lord, her children and family. She thoroughly enjoyed reading and was a speed reader. You’d never catch her without at least one book in her purse! She also loved shopping, sewing, quilting, traveling, sculpting, drawing and creative writing. She loved nature and all animals and was a volunteer at Blendon Woods Metro Park for many years. She was an avid baker and made some of the best homemade bread you could ever have! She was a faithful lifelong member of Trinity Baptist Church where she taught primary Sunday School and was active in the Quilting Ministry. She was, by far, one of the most talented, loyal, loving and giving people you’d ever meet. Preceding her in death were her parents McKinley, Sr. and Burnice Mitchell; and brother, Leon Scaife, Sr. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 54 years, Walter Brooks; four children, Walter “Gene” (Kristen) Brooks, II, Tiya (Augilia) Sowell, Dara (Alfie Banks) Brooks, Eric (Artina) Brooks; sister, Martha Smith; brother, McKinley Mitchell, Jr; sisters in law, Nellie “Pibby” Crockett and Saundra Johnson; 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; special cousin and caregiver who was more like a sister, Eddie Ruth Sims; best friend since childhood, Laura Moncrief; several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends and her loving church family.
