Madeline Haynes

Madeline (Allen) Haynes was the youngest child of the late Ella (Baker) and Commodore Allen. She was born on September 25, 1927 (1928) in Florence, AL and departed this life on Sunday, August 9, 2020. Madeline grew up in Florence and was primarily raised by her oldest sister, Elizabeth after the deaths of their parents, siblings, and grandmother. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Madeline grew up with her niece and nephew, “Cookie” and “Brother”. She attended and graduated Burrell High School in Florence; then attended Tennessee State University where she became a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and was crowned Miss TSU in 1951. She graduated with a degree in Home Economics. During her time at TSU, Madeline met John W. Haynes. They were married on June 1, 1952 and were married for 45 years until his death in 1997. To this union were born 3 children, Commodore Herron, Rita, and Brenda. Madeline was a homemaker for several years until her husband served in the Vietnam War. She then taught school in Rantoul, IL where John had been stationed. After his return, the family moved to Columbus, Ohio where Madeline worked for Columbus Public Schools. She taught Home Ec at Mohawk Jr/Sr High, Starling Jr High, and retired from Yorktown Jr. High. Madeline was a true homemaker, baker, and cook. She was an extraordinary seamstress, making her own wedding dress, Cotillion dresses for her daughters, as well as clothes for her children and grandchildren, having a great eye for color and style. Madeline enjoyed line dancing and chair volleyball at the Marion Franklin Sr. Center. She enjoyed putting together 1000 piece puzzles. She was a “road warrior”, making trips to Tennessee and Alabama as well as to Kansas on her own. Madeline was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Madeline was a member of Old First Presbyterian Church serving through the years as a church elder and teaching in Peace School. She enjoyed bringing treats for Bible study and baking for special occasion dinners. She was always positive, trusting in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and encouraging her family to do the same. She was preceded in death by her parents Ella (Baker) and Commodore Allen, brother Commodore Allen, sisters Mary Ella Allen and Elizabeth Green, husband John W Haynes, grandson Michael Newton, and son in law Edward Williams. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Commodore Herron Haynes, Rita Haynes-Newton, and Brenda Haynes Williams; 7 grandchildren: Aaron and Elisabeth Newton, Crystal (Karina) Haynes, Carmen (Bradley) Bryd, and Candice Haynes, Edward and Lydia Williams. Great grandchildren: John Newton; Isaiah and Isaac Sweatte; Bradley, Harmonie and Heavenly Bryd; Michelle Pacheco, Kaleb and Darlene Delgado; Niece: Mary Ella Hudson and nephew: James Greene; Cousin: Louise Garner; sister in law: Bernice Brown; daughter in law Revana Haynes, special friends Billie Barkley and Margaret Ann Samuels and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Beginning at 1:00 pm, doors will open for a walk-through viewing with staggered admission of up to 10 people at a time. For the mutual wellness and respect of those present, all visitors are asked to wear an appropriate face covering, apply an alcohol-based hand sanitizer spray upon entry, and maintain proper distancing according to current public health guidelines. We encourage you to utilize Madeline's memorial celebration wall to view her video tribute, send flowers and post an expression of sympathy and support for the family. A receptacle will also be available for on-site collection of sympathy cards and condolence letters.
