Marilyn Reissland was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Beulah Braxton Davis and Lawrence Henry on September 30, 1932. She was the middle child of three- Alma was the eldest and Daniel was the baby. She attended St. Monica Grammar School where she met Albert in the first grade. Marilyn and Albert both later attended Booker T. Washington High School. While in high school, Marilyn and several friends made a pact to attend college. Marilyn enrolled in nursing school at Dillard University. All of her aunts and uncles pitched in money so she could attend. While in nursing school, her aunt laundered and starched her nurse's uniforms. Her uniforms were pearly white and starched so stiff, they could stand up on their own. Marilyn did her student nursing at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. The student nurses from Dillard had a reputation for being tough. Marilyn lived up to that reputation and was no nonsense. Marilyn and her friends kept their pact, all graduating from college. After graduating from Dillard University, Marilyn worked as a registered nurse serving her community as a public health nurse in various capacities: Grant Hospital; Sisters of the Sick Poor; School Nurse at St. Ladislas, Corpus Christi, St. Leo's, St. Mary's, St. Mary Magdalene and St. Stephen's Grammar Schools; St. Stephen's Health Center; Mount Carmel Outreach; and Columbus Public Health's Project Love. She also served on the advisory board of Capital Park Family Health Center. Marilyn loved bingo and bowling. After retiring several times, Marilyn opened her family room to the grandchildren, running Granny's One Room School-House. Marilyn remained generous throughout her life and true to her roots. Marilyn made a mean pot of gumbo and the best red beans and rice with cornbread on the side. Marilyn passed away peacefully on Friday, July 22, 2022. She is preceded in death by: her husband of 50 years, Albert; her siblings Daniel and Alma and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ervin and Vivian Rouson.
