Marjorie Theresa (Etheridge) Hargrove

April 26, 1922 — March 16, 2016

Marjorie T. Hargrove was born April 26, 1922 to Willie L. Etheridge and Susie Mae (McClendon) Etheridge in Cuthbert, Georgia. Known to her family and friends as Smart Baby, she graduated from the Randolph County Training School, in Cuthbert, where she earned the distinguished honor of being recognized as Valedictorian of her class. Marjorie attended college in Atlanta, Georgia and taught school in Cuthbert. As a child, she joined Payne Chapel A.M.E. Church in Cuthbert, and later united with Bethel A.M.E. Church, in Columbus, Ohio, where she was a dedicated member for more than 65 years. Her active participation included membership in the Gospel Choir, Lay Organization, and the Forever Young Auxiliary. Marjorie retired from the City of Columbus, Department of Health, with which she was employed as a Home Health Aide. For over 25 years, she also volunteered with the CDC Headstart Foster Grandparent Program and received numerous awards for her service. She bowled with the Bethel A.M.E. Church League and also enjoyed reading and teaching others. Her sweet potato pies and bid whist skills could not be duplicated. She loved the Lord, Bethel A.M.E. Church, and her family. Marjorie trusted in the Lord and would tell you to ask Him and He will make a way. On Wednesday, March 16, 2016, Marjorie T. Hargrove was called home to rest with her Lord and Savior. Her parents, husband John Hargrove, and siblings, Louise, Bennie, James, and Charles Etheridge, preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted daughter Theresa Hargrove-Day; devoted son John Hargrove; grandchildren, Joe, Jarel, Jasmine, and August; a host of great grandchildren including Isaiah, Jaylon, Cameron, Jaida, Nehemiah, Ebony, Jakyla, and Eriyon; uncle Matthew Mathis Lewis of Americus, Georgia; several nieces including Mayo R. Jordan and Beverly Burks; several great nieces including Paula Webb and Bianca Knowles; great nephew Anthony Rogers; sister-in-law Julia Etheridge of Decatur, Georgia; goddaughter Monika Reeder; many cousins, other relatives, and friends.
