Mary Beatrice Stephens, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Forest Hills Center. She was born on March 30, 1925 to Oscar and Lucille Turner in Springfield, Ohio, the only child born of this union. She was raised by her grandmother, Charlie Mae Huff, in Columbus, Ohio. At age 16, she married Bennie Stephens. Unfortunately, she was widowed less than two years later when her husband lost his life while serving our country in the Philippines. Although she did not have any children of her own, she was always very motherly to those in need. Sister Stephens was a member of Grace Independent Methodist Church under the leadership of Reverend J. B. Harris where she faithfully served as a Stewardess. She later united with Stewart Memorial CME Church where she recommitted her life to the Lord and served as a Stewardess Emeritus. When her health permitted, she would attend Wednesday Bible Study and Sunday Morning Worship. She loved the fellowship, especially the “senior gatherings” at Stewart Memorial. An avid reader and good listener, her counsel was highly valued by those who knew her best. She was an excellent cook and skilled baker who specialized in pound cakes. She was an engaging individual who shared a unique sense of humor. A valued employee at several companies during her adult life, she retired from Ingersoll-Rand after many years of service in numerous capacities. “Miss Mary” is preceded in death by her husband, Bennie Stephens; parents, Oscar and Lucille Turner; grandmother, Charlie Mae Huff, and other family. She leaves to cherish her memory her Stewart Memorial CME ChurchFamily; special friends, Anna Finn, Ruby Lee and Gayle Hogan; other family and friends.
