Mary C Johnson

Mary Carolyn Gill Johnson was born on October 6, 1925 in Columbus Ohio, the fourth child of Myrtle and Edward Gill. She was predeceased by her siblings Minnie (Mrs. John D. White), Matthew, Eugene and Lois Ann Gill and her husband of 53 years William "Tom" Johnson. She is survived by her children Thomas (Ann), Douglas (Pam), Steven (Jenny), Christopher (Terry), and Maria (Robert); three grandchildren James Edward, Kara, Lance; and great granddaughter Blair. Mary spent her retirement years in Ocala, FL where she was active in many social and civic endeavors. She served for a number of years as an officer on the council of Our Saviour Lutheran Church. She served as treasurer of Church Women United of Greater Marion County. She was on the executive committee of the Cosmopolitan Club of Ocala and a member of the Utopians, both groups dedicated to giving scholarships to minority youth. She was a charter member of the Ebony Red Hatters and played in a number of card and game clubs. She owned and operated an ACBL affiliated bridge club in Ocala for nine years and played with a number of different partners including her husband. She was also a mah-jongg player, an NYT crossword puzzle enthusiast and an avid reader of the mystery/thriller genre. In Columbus she was a proud charter member of TWIG 110 of the Children's Hospital, a former member of the Columbus Chapter of Girl Friends, Inc., and formally affiliated with the Child Guidance League, Inc. She was active at her church St. Philip Evangelical Lutheran. She was a volunteer at the Oncology Center at the former Park Hospital. She was active in all endeavors associated with her children - Sunday School, VBS, Cub Scouts, athletic booster clubs, PTA, etc. She participated in many civic activities, charity drives and political campaigns. She spent her professional life working in the capacity of finance officer for a number of human services organizations including CMACO, Model Cities, United Community Council and the Ohio Department of Human Services (now ODJFS). Home Going Celebration 11AM, Thursday, July 22, 2021 at St Philip Lutheran Church, 1506 E. Long St., where her family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until time of service.
