Mary Frances (Carter) Glascor

Mary Frances Carter Glascor, 100, departed this life December 5, 2016 in her home. A lifelong resident of Columbus, Ohio, Mary was born November 29, 1916 and was the middle child of 11 in a land-owning family on the Hilltop of Columbus. In 1934, Mary graduated from West High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, and went on to attend Howard University as a scholarship recipient. In 1938, she graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.S. in Social Administration and later completed post graduate studies in Advanced Social Casework. Mary married Sargent Major Milner who died in WWII. She then married Judge H. Alfred “Ray” Glascor and two children were born. Throughout her career, Mary was a humanitarian, civic leader, and social leader. “Lord make this a better world, beginning with me,” was her daily prayer, and thus Mary spent her life helping to enrich her community. A prolific trailblazer and “integrator,” she was the 1st African-American Supervisor of Franklin County Red Cross, 1st African-American Academic Advisor at OSU College of Education, 1st African-American Director’s Assistant for the YWCA, founding organizer for Second Community Church, and founding trustee for Pastoral Counseling Services, Inc. She was a former officer and life member of Church Women United, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Girl Scouts of America Founders Council, West High School Alumni Association, OSU Alumni Association, WWII Memorial Committee (Charter Member), National Association of Social Workers (Charter Member), YWCA, NAACP, National World War II Memorial (Charter Member), and The Moles, Inc. Mary’s vast civic involvement includes the Ohio Children’s Trust Fund, Academy of Certified Social Workers, United Way, American Association of University Women, OSU Minority Affairs Advisory Board, LifeCare Alliance, Columbus Community Relation Commission (under two mayors), Columbus Urban League, Columbus Bar Association Auxiliary, League Against Child Abuse, P.T.A. (national and local levels), United Negro College Fund, UNICEF (Volunteer), Friends of OSU Libraries, Area Council of Churches, and P. Wheatley Home for Unmarried Mothers. At OSU, she received the following awards and honors: 1st Annual “ED LUMS” Service Award, Outstanding Service (Office of Minority Affairs), OSU Alumni Award, Dedication Award (Black Student Union) and the President’s Award and Citation. Mary’s other awards and honors include: Franklin County Churchwoman of the Year, Community Leaders of America (National Association of Leaders), Citizen Service Citation (Ohio House of Representatives), Columbus Mayor’s Award for Human Services, West High School Alumni Hall of Fame, The Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame, Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, Grand Marshall (Ohio State Fair), Woman of Character (Hilltop Civic Association), 50-Yr. Service Award (Girl Scouts of America), Guild Award (Columbus Urban League), Mustard Seed Award (Church Women United), and the Volunteer Award (United Way). Many precious moments in Mary’s life include celebrating over 65 years of marriage to “Ray”, seeing her husband appointed to the Court Bench by Governor Rhodes as well as his subsequent election and re-election, “Butch” graduating from Findlay College, “Jenny” graduating from OSU (where Mary surprised her and presented the degree to her in “The Shoe”) and later receiving her Master’s (with honors) from Denver University, traveling the world, maintaining a second home at Indian Lake (fondly known as “Buckeye Country”) for enjoyment of friends, managing the development of the WWII National Memorial in Washington, D.C., then sponsoring her six brothers’ and Sgt. Major Milner’s names to be inscribed there, spending time with her AKA Sorors, dancing, and spending time at her sewing machine. Of 11 children, Mary was the last survivor and the only sibling to reach 100 years of age, a milestone she recently celebrated with her closest friends and family. In addition to her parents, William F. Carter and Mary Royal Carter, Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Judge H. Alfred Glascor, son Rayford Carter Glascor, 6 brothers, and 4 sisters. She is survived by her daughter Jennifer Lynn Glascor; grandson Myles Glascor; great granddaughter Myla Glascor; daughter-in-law Ernestine Glascor; and extended family, Wilma and David Graeff, Amy and Todd Vanculin, and John McFadden. Celebration of Life 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2016 in the chapel of DIEHL-WHITTAKER FUNERAL SERVICE, 720 E. Long St., where her family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the start of service. Interment Green Lawn Cemetery.
