Mary Dalton Cardwell, was born Mary Frances White in Ivanhoe, Virginia on July 23, 1928, departed this life peacefully May 22, 2013. She was a resident of Summit Trace Healthcare for the past two years where she enjoyed attending church services, playing bingo and listening and dancing to music. She was preceded in death by Ruth White, Mother; Walter Dalton and Simon Cardwell (husbands), Brandi Williams, Granddaughter, Travis Morrison, Grandson and Alice Faye Cardwell, Daughter. Mary was raised in West Virginia, where she attended Gary High School in Gary, West Virginia. She spent her younger years in Wilcoe, Gary and Pageton. She later moved to Jenkinjones, where she was a member of AME Zion Methodist Church serving on the Usher Board for many years until the passing of her husband (Simon Cardwell) when she later moved to Columbus, Ohio. She was well known, loved by many and will always be remembered as Ms. Frances or Ms. Mary, the lady that would tell you “just what she thought”. She died with grace and dignity, because she did it “her way.” She is survived by her children, Walter (Linda) Dalton of Atlanta, Georgia, James and Eugene (Connie) Dalton of Washington, DC, Kathy, Simon and Scott Cardwell and Laura (Richard) Preston of Columbus, Ohio. To carry on her legacy are her grandchildren, Deborah Rippey, Tia Williams, Scott Brinson and Simon Wallace of Columbus, Ohio; Shawn (Sheldon) Smith and Karen (Chad) Carter of Atlanta, Georgia; Walter Dalton, Jr. of Chicago, Illinois; Christopher (Inez) Cardwell of Gainesville, Florida; Lisa and Stephanie Cardwell; Richard Preston and TomRhonda (Chad) Mills of Columbus, Ohio; Alphonso Dalton of San Diego, California and Marie Dalton of Washington, DC. To cherish her memory are great-grandchildren, O’Sheaynna, Donte, Alamonte’ and Christopher of Columbus, Ohio. To remember her always are 23 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
