Mary Magdalene Rogers, 85 (affectionately known as “Mag” by her family) was born on March 27, 1933 in Meridian, (Newton County) Mississippi. The daughter of the late Chavis and Amie (Holbert) Moncrief, she departed this life on Tuesday, January 29, 2019. Our Mom accepted Christ early in life. She was baptized before age 10. Sister Mary was a long time member of the First Church of God under the leadership of Bishop Timothy J.Clarke for over 30 years. Her membership began when First Church was located on Fair Avenue where she served as a faithful disciple and as a volunteer in the food pantry under the leadership of Mother Payne. After the church moved to Refugee she served in the hospitality ministry as a greeter with her daughter Emmie. Prior to First Church, she served as an adult Sunday school teacher at Bethany Christian Church. Our Mom was the Superintendent of Sunday School and sang in the choir at New Zion Baptist Church under the late Pastor BJ Washington. She was a deaconess at Mt. Zion Baptist Church (American Edition) under the late Pastor Richard Harriston. Our Mom arrived in Columbus at age 19. She met and was married to the late Eugene Rogers a few years later. They owned the Rogers Chesapeake Restaurant on Long Street. Mary was a homemaker and also worked in the restaurant as a waitress. Later she was employed at Ohio Avenue School and Catholic Social Services. Our Mom loved STUDYING the bible and FISHING! She enjoyed playing UNO and interacting with friends and family. She looked forward to traveling especially going to see her family in Detroit and down South. Mary trusted in the Lord and she made sure all six of her children learned about Christ and had the opportunity to accept salvation. She was preceded in death by her sister: Corena Mae Gaddis and her two brothers: Earnest Moncrief and Chavis Moncrief Jr. She is survived by her children: Dana (Garry) Rogers-Cooper, Enzo Rogers, Amie (Roger) Williams, Vivian Rogers-Gauthier, Emmie Lester and Jewel Rogers. Grandchildren: Antoinette (Ryan) Dillard, Inez (Michael) Pace, Dominic (Roxanne) Williams, Charles Gauthier, Garry Cooper II and Marcus Cooper. She has 4 great grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
