Matthew Hairston was born May 9, 1943 in Columbus to the union of Mr. Mrs. Matthew and Susie Hairston. He was a graduate of Columbus East High School. Matthew was united in marriage to JoAnn P. Bowman. To this union was born daughter Katrina N. Hairston. He loved to bowl and play games with friends and family. He retired from Lucent Technologies with more than 30 years of service. Deacon Matthew Hairston whole-heartedly confessed Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized at Refuge Baptist Church by his grandfather, the Rev. R. F. Hairston, Sr. He was an ordained deacon at the Refuge Baptist Church. He later joined the Columbus Believers Church under the leadership of Pastor Landareece Brown where he served as a deacon for 21 years. On Tuesday August 1, 2017 at Mt. Carmel West Hospital, Matthew departed this life. He was preceded in death by his, mother, Susie Amelia Hairston Jordan, father, Matthew William Hairston, and his daughter Trina Hairston Taylor, grandmother Lula Robinson, grandfather, Frank Robinson, paternal grandparents, R. F. Hairston, Sr. and Arizona Clayton Hairston. Matthew leaves to cherish his dear memories his loving wife, JoAnn Hairston; sister, Scherrell Turner; grandson, Avery; son-in-law, Albert Taylor of Cleveland Ohio; uncle, Marvin C. Hairston; aunt, Dorothy Mae Pounds; sisters-in-law, Jesse Bowman, Ernestine Bowman, Tammie Henderson, and Darlene Taylor; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. Matthew will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
