The beautiful Mrs. Mattie Mae Wright Newell was born on July 1st,1932 in Sledge, Mississippi and went home to be with the Lord on February 22nd, 2017 surrounded by family. Mattie was the 1st born to Lindsay Lee and Evelyn Wright. Mattie was an exceptional child who wanted to be the protector for all whom she loved and cared for. Once Mattie became an adult, she found herself in love with an army solider named Eddie Newell. Eddie and Mattie married and had three children; Catherine, Eddie Jr., and Terry. Later as Mattie's children got older, Mattie decided to travel across the United States meeting new friends and family. Mattie was truly the jack of all trades having performed multiple occupations, including being a florist, housekeeper, and a factory worker. Mattie served her community by being involved with programs such as Grandparent' Raising Grandchildren (The Lighthouse, INC), a member of the Eastern Star, Sunday School member at Church of Christ of the Apostolic and Halls Memorial, and a generous donator to the Ohio State University Scholarship fund. In addition, along with her son Eddie, she was involved with campaigning for former president Obama in 2008 and again in 2012. The greatest job title she proudly held was being a servant for the Lord. Mattie received Christ in the 1970's after experiencing a tragedy involving her youngest son. Mattie credited the Lord for giving her strength, love, and assurance that her son was comforted in his hands. When Mattie decided to live in Columbus, Ohio, she was led by God to Hall's Memorial Church. Mattie was a faithful member to former pastors Ernest and Lemme Ruth Jordan, she became one of the founding mothers of the church. Mattie continued to be an active member of Hall's Memorial until 1993 when God lead her to The Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith until her transition to heaven. Mattie was proceeded in death by her husband Eddie; daughter, Catherine Horton-Miller; sons, Eddie and Terry Newell; grandson, Robert (Bobby) Horton; sisters, Gloria Blackmon, Sylvia Butler, Maple ( Bay) Stevenson, Minnie Lee ( Tolbar) Wright, and Viola Wright; brothers, Lindsay Wight, Robert Earl Wright, and Dan Wright; best friend for over twenty years, Lucille Carter-Shaw; and special friend of the family Adell Dean.
