Mazie A. Peterson was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She passed away on August 9, 2024, at 95 years of age. She was born on a beautiful day in Pomeroy, Ohio, on May 29, 1929.
She was a mother and caregiver first, caring for all she encountered. While working at the ticket booth at the landmark Lincoln Theater on Long Street in Columbus, Ohio she met the love of her life, Jasper Peterson, Jr. He was a military policeman in the historic sections of Long St, Mt. Vernon, and surrounding areas. Lots of love, laughter, and travels were shared between the two throughout their 63-year marriage as they traveled the country with Jasper's military service before finally settling in Columbus, Ohio. She was a beautician by trade. Together, they had four children.
Mazie loved bowling and became a member of the Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) and was inducted into the Women's Bowling Hall of Fame—member emeritus. In 2020, Mazie received a commendation from the Governor of Ohio for being the oldest living member of Old Oaks Historic District, where she lived for 60 years. She was employed with General Motors, where she worked for 26 years before retiring.
Mazie loved travel and a good cruise while spending time enjoying the country and the world. She attended Wesley Church of Hope and held a strong and faithful conviction and love for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This was evident in her ability to forgive, love, and sacrifice for those blessed enough to know her. She was kind to all and had two fur babies later in life, Mr. Baby and Johnnie B., whom she loved for dearly. She will be profoundly missed by all who met her.
Preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Peterson Jr.; her parents, Jerry and Lydia Nuby; sister, Gloria Simpson; brother Linden Nuby Sr; sister-in-law, Earnestine Nuby; nephews Jeremiah Simpson (Buzzy) and Linden Nuby Jr.; and grandson, Paul Alexander Arnold III.
Left to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy are her children, Larry (Vivian) Peterson, Carlita (Fred) Johnson, Linda & Jeffrey Peterson; grandchildren, Lisa Peterson, cherished granddaughter Lauren Poindexter (Patrick Sr.), Brandonn Arnold (Samantha), Maurice and Bryan Johnson; great-grandchildren, Abdul Tyus Craig, Makayla Poindexter, Patrick Poindexter, Jr., Amaya & Detrick Arnold; great-great-grandchildren Tyus Craig, and Skye Johnson. She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Please send love and kindness to one another in honor of Mazie Peterson.
Grandma never met a stranger or a person she would not help. She always got more bees with honey and left you in a better position than when she found you. She reminded me often to be thankful and grateful for all of God's gifts because it could have been worse. I will forever miss you. You cared when no one else did; you believed when no one else would. You made us safe and sacrificed to raise us. I will always hold you in my mind and heart. Thank you for loving us, all! - Lauren Poindexter
