Meda Mason

August 21, 1934 — November 13, 2024

Meda Iola Mason was born in Scott County, Kentucky on August 21,1943 to the late Robert S. Banks and Anna Burley Banks. Meda was called to Eternal Rest and Reward on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

Meda was educated and a proud graduate of the Scott County Public School District. Meda attended Kentucky State University and while there she was a participant in the university's marching band. Meda also completed two years at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky. After leaving Georgetown, she moved to Columbus, Ohio. She continued her education and attended classes at Ohio Dominican College and The Ohio State University in languages and business courses.

In recognition of Meda’s courage in challenging racial barriers and transforming Georgetown College, Meda Mason was recently inducted into the Georgetown College Hall of Fame on October 1, 2024. Meda was one of the first African-American students chosen to enroll at Georgetown College. The Hall of Fame was established in 1993 to honor outstanding alumni and friends who have made distinctive contributions to Georgetown College during their lifetimes.

Meda received Christ at an early age at the First Baptist Church in Georgetown, Kentucky. She later, after relocating to Columbus, Ohio became a member of Bethany Baptist Church with her late husband, Raymond Mason, Jr. She was an active member in the church and taught Sunday School until her health would not allow her to attend the morning worship services.

On January 27, 1953, Meda married Raymond Mason, Jr., the love of her life and they have been blessed with 70 years of marriage. Meda accomplished the majority of her dreams/goals but her ultimate joy was parenting their precious daughter, Angelia. Meda was a loving and supportive wife, mother, friend, and a "special aunt" to all of her nieces and nephews. Meda was always welcoming and friendly.

During Meda’s stay at Kensington Place she enjoyed the opportunity and looked forward to worship service on Sunday afternoons. She loved the Lord and always insisted that the staff pick-her-up and take her to the 3:00 pm service.

Meda enjoyed music and was a member of Kentucky State University’s marching band. She also enjoyed playing the piano. Her other hobbies include sewing, travelling and cruising all over the world and visiting family and friends. She also enjoyed her wide collection of turtles.

Meda was employed by DCSC and retired after 40 years of service.
