Michelle M. Oakman

MICHELLE MARIE OAKMAN was born in Omaha, Nebraska on Tuesday, June 3, 1958. She was the daughter of Jenette and Woodrow Woody Helm. However, she was adopted and raised by Bessie and Oscar Newby. Family and friends affectionately called her “Shelly.” Michelle was a resident of the Columbus, Ohio community for over forty years. She loved the Lord and was a member of Second Community Church. Michelle worked in retail, property management, and was a domestic engineer. She was very active in the community. Michelle served with AmeriCorp, helping others and meeting critical needs of the community. She also volunteered at after school programs for low-income children, where she assisted in lock-ins, swimming lessons, and other activities. In her leisure, Michelle loved to read and listen to music. She passed this love to her children and grandchildren. Our beloved Michelle M. Oakman entered eternal rest on Wednesday, June 30, 2021. She was sixty-three years of age. She was preceded in death by her biological parents, Jenette and Woodrow Woody Helm; her adoptive parents, Bessie and Oscar Newby; beloved son, Michael Thompkins; and sisters, Pamlea Newby and Rita Ann Fuller. Loving memoires are cherished by her daughters, Angela Thompkins and Tiffany Oakman; son, Demetrius Oakman; adoptive son, Brandon Cloud; seven grandchildren, Demisha, Demetrius, Dylane, Alyna, Dante, Selena, and Isabelle; siblings, Sherwood (“Lynnie”) Hill, Lynette (Steven “T.D.”) Crumpler, William (Carlos) Canada, Ricky Helm, and Mario (Karen) Helm; a host of other family members and many friends.
