Mildred O Stigger

December 14, 1946 — March 29, 2018

Mildred O. Stigger, age 71, was born in Hampton, Virgina on December 14, 1946. She moved to Japan for 3 years in 1971 during her husband’s military service. There she taught children of American soldiers at Yakota Airbase. In 1974 they relocated to Columbus, Ohio where she remained. Mildred was an educator. Both in and out of her home. When she stopped teaching in the classroom she opened up her home to tutor students of all ages. She did this without accepting any compensation but rather for the love of seeing young people succeed. As many would attest, Mildred’s teachings extended beyond academics. She gave lessons in cooking, reading and understanding the Bible and it’s scripture and shared a whole host of life lessons and wisdom. Mildred was many things to many people. Among those titles: Wife, Mother, Sister, Grandmother, Mentor, Leader and Champion. Everyone who met Mildred soon became new additions to her already large family. Not a single one was forgotten and each one was dearly loved. On March 29, 2018, Mildred went home to be with the Lord. She was preceded in death by mother and father, Inez and Welton F. Brown, her brothers Welton Brown, Jr., Richard Brown, and Roger Brown, her sister Gladys Brown Watson, and her daughter Niaya Stigger. Left to mourn and carry on Mildred’s legacy are her husband Phillip L. Stigger, Sr.; her son, Phillip L. Stigger III; her sisters, Amy (Larry), Hebron, Virginia Brown, Doris Brown, Wanda Warden and Tammie Weaver; her brother-in-law, James Sheppard; her sisters by heart, Beryl McGowan, Carol Phillips, Diane Spears, and Joann Henley; her grandchildren by heart, Mikiala Pope, Samuel Abrha, Yesharghe Abrha, Wonee Abrha, Menaleza Abrha, Ida Adugna, Rahel Adugna, Mahlet Kinde, Raynita McGowan, Justus Gordon, Jaylon Chambliss and Justin Chambliss; her sons by heart, BK Ujah and Barnett McGowan; daughter by heart Lisa McGowan; and a host of nieces and nephews including, Michael Moses, Chauncy Featherston, Trina Featherston-Jenkins, Sade Featherston, Sam Simmons, Jason Simmons, Donnie Ballard, Michelle Sheppard, James Sheppard Jr. Charles Sheppard, and great niece Melissa Sheppard.
