Millicent Jeannine (Gaither) Sims

June 30, 1958 — February 15, 2011

Millicent Jeanine Gaither Sims, 52, best known for her work as an advocate for cancer awareness, died of pancreatic cancer on February 15, 2011. Born in Chicago, IL, Millicent grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana and settled in Columbus, Ohio after graduating from The Ohio State University. She worked at the Ohio Department of Health and retired from the Environmental Protection Agency. Millicent was a member of the New Salem Baptist Church, The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the Livingston Park Neighborhood Improvement Association. She was a founding member and Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the African American Cancer Support Group; a peer reviewer for the National Cancer Institute and the National Cancer Program; and a Board member of the Columbus Chapter of Race for the Cure. She is preceded in death by parents Millie and James Gaither. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Charles R. Sims; children, Charles Chaz Renoir Sims and Kanika Nikki (Kevin) Steward; grandchildren, Kendall, Kennedy and Christopher; brother, Renoir (Caroline) Gaither and their daughter, niece, Acoma; uncle, Charles Miller; mother-in-law, Geraldine Sims; sisters-in-¬law, Jackie Marbrey, Crystal Carrera, Carla (Frederic) Sims-Yonnet; brother-in-law, Joseph (Jo) Sims; the Bronner Family of Chicago and Atlanta, and a host of relatives and spiritually adopted family and friends.
