Norman 'Hop' Gilstrap

June 25, 1925 — May 8, 2010

Norman Gilstrap, who was lovingly known as “Hop” was born on June 25, 1925 in Covington, Georgia to the late Cleo Gilstrap and Julia Smith, passed away on May 8, 2010. A United States Army Veteran, “Hop” served in World War II. He enjoyed life to the fullest with a passion for family, shooting pool and playing cards. Norman was preceded in death by his sisters, Lizzie Grier, Nellie Grace Beese and Emma Gilstrap; niece Barbara Kendrick and cousin James Simms. He is survived by his daughter, Julia Ann Bland; grandson, Valon Ayers; great granddaughters, Alexis and Brittany Ayers; life partner and friend, Grace Brown; sister, Othera Scott, of Atlanta, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews and a lot of friends. Celebration of Life 2pm, Thursday, May 13, 2010 in the chapel of Diehl-Whittaker Funeral Service, 720 E. Long Street, where the family will receive friends from 1pm until the start of services. Interment Eastlawn Cemetery.
