Ovetta Rogers Flood was born in Selma, Alabama, where she graduated from the former R.B. Hudson High School, Class of 1958. She then relocated to Ohio and enrolled in undergraduate courses at Central State University located in Wilberforce. One of Ovetta's proudest moments was to have her mother in the audience as she received her Bachelor's degree in Education. With much anticipation and excitement, Ovetta began a successful teaching career with the Columbus City Schools. She retired after 34 years as a Special Education teacher in the Franklin County Program for Special Needs. Ovetta was a longtime, faithful disciple of the Trinity Baptist Church, in Columbus, where she served her Lord, her church, and her community in various capacities, including the Hospitality Ministry, Catering Ministry, Vacation Bible School; the Eastern Union Missionary Baptist Association (EUMBA) and the Ohio Baptist General Convention (OBGC). She especially enjoyed her work with the young ladies of The Hattie Jackson Guild Girls. She also completed a rigorous course of study offered through the Eastern Union Bible College, and more recently, was recognized by the EUMBA as Counselor of the Year. Clearly, Ovetta had a heart for young people and it was evident by the influence she had on the lives of those whom she so profoundly touched. She was elated to learn of the births of each of her grandchildren and cherished the many memorable occasions she spent with her beloved family and dear friends, who more affectionately called her Vett. She lived her life to the fullest and she did it her way. Ovetta peacefully took her eternal rest on Monday, April 16, 2012 at her residence. She was predeceased by her mother Willie Mae Mixon, sisters, Ola L. Pettway, Vivian Rogers, and Edna Rogers, and brothers, Clifford Rogers, Dewitt Rogers, Luvert Rogers, and Rufus Jones. Those who remain to celebrate her life and legacy are her son Taunn (Kim) Flood of Fort Knox, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Bre-Aunna, Pheniox, Miri and Greyson; two brothers Eugene Rogers of Chicago, Illinois and Clarence Rogers of Cleveland, Ohio; sister Althelstein (Charles Sr.) Johnson of Selma, Alabama; God sister Laura Moncrief, Godmother Inez Moncrief, and devoted friend Peggy Ross, all of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of other cherished relatives, friends, and church family. Homegoing Celebration 11 a.m., Monday, April 23, 2012 at Trinity Baptist Church, 461 St. Clair Avenue, where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the start of service. Rev. Dr. Victor M. Davis, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will immediately follow in Glen Rest Memorial Estate, Reynoldsburg, Ohio. But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. ~ Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)
