Phillip Mayo

September 2, 1972 — January 28, 2024

Phillip G. Mayo, 51, of Columbus Ohio passed on Sunday January 28, 2024. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on September 2, 1972 to the late Julius W. Mayo Jr. and Lillian (Holland) Mayo.

Phillip graduated from Briggs Senior High School where he served as Senior Class President. There, he enjoyed soccer, and running track. His love for learning continued at The Ohio State University where he earned; two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Sociology and Black Studies, and a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Policy & Leadership. He completed additional coursework as a Ph.D. student in the College of Education & Human Ecology.

Over the years he enjoyed shaping the minds of young people in various educational institutions: Columbus City Schools, Columbus State Community College, and The Ohio State University. He served as the Program Manager at The Frank W. Hale Center under the leadership and mentorship of Mr. Larry Williamson. In addition to serving in a supervisory role, Phill enjoyed coordinating the annual Kwanzaa celebration on campus. Phill had a great love for learning, drawing, writing and teaching.

Phillip was a disciple of Mount Olivet Baptist Church where Dr. Eugene Gibson is Pastor. Phill served as the ministry leader for the African American Heritage Ministry at Mount Olivet for years under the leadership of the late Dr. Charles E. Booth. Phillip enjoyed facilitating spirited discussions on past and current events relevant to the African American community. In 2021, he decided to return back to Columbus City Schools District where he spent his formative years, to teach high school students at Whetstone High School. He made the most of “teachable moments” like those learned in Mayo School on Gilbert Street. Having a strong spiritual foundation, embracing education and giving to others were lessons he learned at home. His mother, Deaconess Lillian (Holland) Mayo at Trinity Baptist Church would describe him as a lover of her soul food meals, a hard worker, and a Buckeye Fan. Phillip understood what it meant to be a lifelong learner and never giving up on his dreams.

He enjoyed relaxing and spending time with his family. When he wanted to get away, The Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio was one his favorite places to visit. Phillip lived a full life and we thank the Lord for him!

He is preceded in death by his father, Julius W. Mayo Jr., and several beloved family members.

While Phillip was known as a son, brother, uncle, father figure and friend, being a child of Jesus Christ was his most important accomplishment.

Surviving family include his mother, Mrs. Lillian Mayo, brother, Dr. Julius W. Mayo III (Maria, special friend) sister, Rochelle (John), former wife, Lovie and stepdaughter, Kimberly, nephew, Ray’mond, and niece, Zoë. He leaves a host of family members, friends, and classmates who will cherish his memory.
