Phyllis was a resident of Columbus, Ohio, until she married a wonderful man of God Professor John Eskridge, of Harriman, Tennessee, in 1985. Phyllis returned to Columbus after the death of her beloved husband, John. Phyllis lived a life of service. She was involved in church and community activities wherever she resided. As a Registered Nurse, Phyllis would always tell her patients, Physicians and Nurses have medical knowledge and technical skills, but it is God who Heals. Phyllis was a friend to the friendless, compassionate, and loving to everyone. She was an activist in correcting many forms of Social Injustice. Nursing opened doors to worldwide friendships, exciting experiences, and the use of the Spiritual Gifts given to her by God. Phyllis was a faithful member of New Mount Sinai Church of God in Christ. Phyllis is preceded in death by her natural mother Velma Pollard Nelson, father and stepmother, Joseph and Ruby Nelson, brother Bill Nelson, and her beloved Uncle Earl and Aunt Mary Nelson of Xenia, Ohio. Phyllis Jean leaves to mourn her passing, sons, Eugene (Sandy) Hawkins, Roderick (Linda) Hawkins, Cornell (Gail Weeber) Hawkins, and Jerald (Marie) Hawkins; sister JoAnn Allison; numerous grandchildren, one great grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
