It is with a rejoicing spirit we celebrate the passing of our beloved Rev. Wogan Woodard , a devoted Pastor, shepherd of faith, and compassionate soul, who peacefully departed from this earthly realm on May 4, 2023. He was a guiding light, an inspirational figure, and a beloved mentor, leaving behind an enduring legacy of faith, love, and service.
Wogan was born on July 29, 1934, in Bartow, Florida, to the late Eddie and Eliza Woodard. After graduating from high school at Union Academy, Mulberry, FL, he matriculated to Edward Waters College and then to Knoxville College, in Knoxville, TN where he played football. In 1956, Wogan received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. At 40 years old, we answered the call to minister and pastor. While pastoring at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama he attended Birmingham Baptist College. He was later led to further his knowledge of the bible by attending Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, TX, where he received a master’s in theology and later founded Forest Hill Community Bible Church. He pastored at Forest Hill over 40 years, until his retirement and relocation to Columbus, OH. He dedicated his life to the ministry, embracing his vocation with unwavering conviction and a profound commitment to spreading the teachings of Gods’ love, hope, and compassion. Throughout his years of service, he touched countless lives, becoming a trusted confidant, a source of solace, and an embodiment of faith for his congregation and beyond.
His sermons and classes were a testament to his unwavering faith and his ability to impart wisdom with eloquence and humility. True to the tradition within the bible church, Rev Woodard would type his notes for the congregation and request them to follow along and use as study guides throughout the week. His words resonated deeply within the hearts of all who listened, inspiring spiritual growth, encouraging compassion, and providing solace during times of adversity. He was a beacon of light in the community, extending his kindness and support to anyone in need, regardless of their circumstances. Rev Wogan was a “Peoples Pastor”. He believed every soul was important was to God.
Beyond his pulpit, Rev Woodard was a pillar of strength and a source of comfort for his congregation. He invested countless hours in counseling, providing guidance, and offering prayers to those seeking solace and spiritual guidance. He would ask, am I speaking to “Sis Jean, or Jean”. His way of constantly reminding us that we must choose to live like Christ every minute of the day. His nurturing spirit and compassionate nature provided a haven for those in search of hope and understanding. He lived his life as a living example of the teachings he shared, leading by example and touching hearts with his unwavering love and grace.
In his personal life, Rev Woodard was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, collegiate athlete, and scholar. His family held a special place in his heart, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He nurtured their faith, imparted his wisdom, and provided unwavering support, encouraging them to embrace their own spiritual journeys. His love and devotion will forever remain a cherished memory for all who were blessed to be a part of his life. He and his siblings share numerous stories of how they helped each other pull through college, marriage, parenting, and trials. Gods’ faithfulness to the Woodard household is a legacy of miraculous works.
