Richard Crawford

November 14, 1927 — January 3, 2025

Richard D. Crawford, Sr., a devoted husband, father, and accomplished professional, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025, at the age of 97. Born to the late Richard Crawford and Pensacola Byrd in November 1927, in Columbus, Ohio, Richard lived a life marked by dedication, perseverance, and a passion for learning.


A proud graduate of East High School, Richard's love for music, particularly big band jazz, led him to enlist in the U.S. Air Force the day after graduation, where he was thrilled to serve as a member of the USAF Band playing the clarinet. This opportunity allowed him to combine his passion for music with his commitment to serving his country. After being honorably discharged, he relocated to Detroit, Michigan, where he briefly worked for Chrysler Corporation before retuning to Columbus.


Richard then embarked on a long and fulfilling career with the United States Postal Service, followed by a stint with International Telephone & Telegraph. During this time, he pursued his higher education, earning his Bachelor of Arts from Central State University. He continued his academic pursuits, earning his masters degree from Central Michigan University. Following the completion of his graduate studies, Richard's career advanced, and he became the Finance Officer for the Ohio Civil Rights Commission, a role that leveraged his expertise and passion for public service.


Richard's professional career was distinguished by his achievement as a Certified Public Accountant, a milestone he cherished deeply. He was a member of the National Association of Accountants and the National Association of Black Accountants, and his expertise was sought after by many. His commitment to public service was recognized by his appointment to Columbus Mayor Rinehart's Mayo/s Leadership Council.


He was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Worthington for many years and enjoyed singing in the choir. He was a member of the St. Mark's Lodge No. 7 Prince Hall Free & Accepted Masons and the L.D. Easton Consistory No. 21. Throughout his life, Richard was guided by his strong Christian faith and his love for his family.


He was married to his beloved wife, Eva, for 71 remarkable years. ln addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his sisters, Alice Crawford and

Velma Crawford Yates, and brothers James Crawford and Fred Crawford. Richard is survived by wife, Eva Lou; son Rick (Laura) Crawford, Jr.; son Ken (Shelly) Crawford; daughter Penny (Greg) Crawford-Alexander; grandsons Bryce (Hallie) Crawford, Evan (Nichole) Crawford, and Grant Crawford; three great-grandchildren Rian, Devyn, and Keo; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, caregivers, and friends.


Visitation at All Saints Lutheran Church, 6770 N. High St., Worthington, Tuesday, January 14th, 10:00 am - 11:00 am. Service will follow at 11:00 am. Burial will take place on Wednesday, January 15th, 2025, at 10:00 am, Green Lawn Cemetery.


The family welcomes donations in Richard’s memory to the National Geographic Society in lieu of flowers.
