Rick “the Hammer” Logan was born August 8, 1941 to the late Margaret Logan Boston in Gilman West Virginia, 20 miles from Bluefield West Virginia. He was raised by his loving grandparents the late John and Eva Logan. Rick departed this life on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at Mount Carmel East Hospital. Rick was educated in the public school system in Gilman, West Virginia. He attended Bluefield State College transferred to The Ohio State University where he received a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education. After graduation he began his teaching career with the Columbus Public Schools at Franklin Junior High School for many years. Rick married Ronda Shepard on April 7, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rick was always an advocate for Teachers and Students. He was an active member of the Columbus Education Association, the Capital/Central District, Ohio Education Association and the National Education Association. He was the first Black Vice President of the CEA. Rick left the CEA and went to the OEA as a Labor Relations consultant. He worked in Eastern Ohio Education Association (on the river) for about five years then return to the CEA as the Chief negotiator where he served until, he retired in May of 2014. He was President of the Columbus Cavalier Club for many years. He was a member and national trainer for National Black Staff Network (NBSN). During his career he held many positions and received many awards and letters of recognition too many to name. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Logan Boston and his grandparents, John and Eva Logan. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Ronda Logan; his children, Rick (Amy) Logan, Rae (Tim) Nichols, Margaret (Darren) Andrews and Quan Bush; grandchildren, Rick Logan Jr., Allison Logan, Alexis Logan, Timothy Nichols, Stephen Nichols, Darian Andrews, Maya Andrews, Micah Nichols, Matthew Nichols, Tara Nichols and Jaslyn Logan; great grandchildren, Dillon Nichols, Olive Murphy and Damian Nichols; sister-in laws, Rosalyn Loyd, Lloyda Potts; and a host of many friends and colleagues.

Beginning at 1:00 p.m., doors will open for a walk-through viewing with staggered admission of up to 10 people at a time. For the mutual wellness and respect of those present, all visitors must wear an appropriate face covering, apply an alcohol-based hand sanitizer spray upon entry, and maintain proper distancing according to current public health guidelines. We encourage you to utilize Richard's memorial celebration wall to send flowers and post an expression of sympathy and support for the family. A receptacle will also be available for on-site collection of sympathy cards and condolence letters.
