Roosevelt "Smitty" Smith

August 4, 1937 — September 7, 2018

Roosevelt "Smitty" Smith was born in Rose Hill, Mississippi on August 4, 1937. He peacefully departed this life and went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 7, 2018, at the age of 81. Roosevelt was united in holy matrimony to Martha P. Spinks on May 16, 1953 and, in this union, three children (two boys and one girl) were born. Roosevelt became a member at Triedstone Baptist Church, along with his family. In June 1958, Roosevelt and his family moved to Columbus, Ohio, making a home on the hilltop (248 Midland), where he raised is family. Roosevelt was a hard-working man, holding up to three jobs at a time. He was one of the best black upholsters of furniture in Columbus. He became a master mechanic for JCPenney and retired with full benefits in 1975. Shortly after, he started his own home-based business (at the Midland address) which he operated under the name of CR Auto Mechanic Shop. That business thrived until 2002. He continued to open garages in various locations on the west side of Columbus where he would service all. In 2012, he retired to enjoy life and spend time at home with his dog Zoey, family, and close friends. Roosevelt became ill in late 2012 and started spending most of his time with his wife, Cheryl, who was his caregiver. Roosevelt's health continued to decline. He was admitted into Riverside Methodist Hospital on Friday, August 24, 2018, where he peacefully departed on Friday, September 7, 2018. Preceding Roosevelt in death are his son Andre Kenyatta Smith, parents, James Smith and Emmaline Aldridge Smith, brothers, Sylvester, Robert, and Isaiah Smith, and sisters, Eliza Jane Campbell and Christine Rambert. Roosevelt leaves to cherish his memories, his dear and loving wife Cheryl West-Smith; son Steve (Louise) Smith; daughters, Veronica Smith and Sabrina Hughes, all of Columbus, Ohio; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including very close friend Wilbert Dismon.
