Ruby Louise Saunders completed her earthly assignment at the age of 93 on Sunday, June 26, 2022. Ruby also affectionately known as “Mommy,” “Grandma Ruby,” “GG,” “Ms. Ruby,” and the “Comeback Queen” was the only child born to Raymond Lee Shern and Luella Bryson Shern on September 4, 1928, in Fayetteville, Tennessee. The family relocated to Columbus, Ohio when she was eight years old. Ruby professed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at an early age by the late Rev. Dr. N.L. Scarborough at Trinity Baptist Church. Ruby was the second of five active generations in Trinity Baptist Church, was a proud faithful member, and attended and worked in church throughout her life. Ruby served on the Junior Usher Board, Junior Choir, Baptist Young Peoples’ Union (BYPU), Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Thanksgiving Feast, Food Pantry, Girl Scouts, and more. Ruby was one of the longest serving Girl Scout Leaders in Ohio Heartland, serving over 45 years. Ruby was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary - Post #157, Postal Alliance Axillary, ITC, “Golden Girls” Birthday Club, Central Community House Senior Group (received the Lifetime Member Award), and Asbury United Methodist Elders. Ruby was a proud graduate of East High School and studied business. Over her career she was employed by DCSC, Xerox Corporation, Columbus Paraprofessional Institute, and New York Technical Institute. After retirement Ruby was a caretaker for many prominent family’s homes throughout the city. Ruby loved the Lord and her church family. She loved and supported her children and grandchildren and loved family vacations and good times together. Ruby loved growing houseplants and anything that would take root that she could plant. She loved talking on the phone and doing check-ins with her family and friends. She also loved sweets, ice cream, crafting, playing games, cook-outs at the park, and laughing. She was a fun feisty jokester who loved life and lived it to its fullest. Ruby entered eternal rest joining her parents, former husband and friend William Saunders, and granddaughter Jiana Sheppard. Left to cherish her memory and to carry on her legacy are daughters and son-in-love, Jacqueline Saunders, Rev. Janet Sheppard, Jennifer Saunders and Victor Sheppard; grandchildren, Janethia Moore, Jackiethia Butsch, Brian Jackson, Allegra Jackson, Janeese Saunders, Jalen-LaSalle Sheppard, Alex Maurice Saunders-White; great grandchildren, Rubie Morris, Azaria Jackson, Brielle Jackson, Merci Stallings, and Josiah Saunders-Harris; special nephew, Danny Wade; special cousin, Lorraine Hampton; a host of relatives, friends, and her Trinity Church Family. “Special love and thanks to my “son” Victor Sheppard for all he has done for me and all of my family.”
