Samuel Louis Mickerson

January 28, 1951 — September 26, 2021

Samuel Louis Mickerson January 28, 1951 - September 26, 2021 Samuel Louis Mickerson was born Sunday, January 28, 1951, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was the son of Wilma M. Thornton and Samuel Mickerson. Samuel spent his early childhood living in the Derita neighborhood of Charlotte, North Carolina. During his preadolescence through early adulthood, he lived in Brooklyn and Queens, New York. “Sam I Am,” “Pop Sam,” “Sam the Man,” and “Sammie Louis Mickerson” were affectionate nicknames family and friends called him. Samuel was a resident of Columbus, Ohio for over twenty-two years. For nineteen years, he previously lived in Columbus, Box Springs, and Macon, Georgia. In his early twenties, Samuel trained to become a carpenter and worked in New York. He later was employed as a production line worker at Goody Products, Inc. in Manchester, Georgia. In Columbus, Ohio, during the late 1990’s, Sam ventured into the home improvement industry, where he renovated and remodeled homes. In his early thirties, his enterprising spirit led him to owning a carpet business and was awarded a contract laying carpet for Sears. Samuel attended Meredith Temple C.O.G.I.C. for many years where he served as an usher. Brother Mickerson was a worker and a thinker. He sought to understand and learn one’s purpose in life through biblical and philosophical teachings. Moreover, he valued teaching and mentoring others about the word of God. Sam’s joy was working with his hands to fix and build things. He used his skills of carpentry and home improvement as a way of giving back to others. Sam also volunteered a lot of his time and was very active in Joyful Inspiration and Transit Arts, a program of Central Community House. Sam loved family and cherished his roles as a father and grandfather. He enjoyed taking his family to parks, participating in school events, dance practices, dining out, and going to local festivals. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and loved when he had opportunities to spend time to spoil them. One of his rememberable sayings was, “See Ya . . . Wouldn’t Want to Be Ya.” Samuel L. Mickerson, age seventy, was called from labor to eternal rest on Sunday, September 26, 2021. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Tahjmon S.M. Mickerson; stepfather, Samuel Thornton; sisters, Patricia (Vernon) Roundtree, Luvenia (William) Bell, Pamela (Eddie) Hall, and Brenda (Marvin) Senter. Loving memories are cherished by his sons, Ajene Livingston of Coatesville, PA, Torahgee, Tecumseh, and Talib Johnson, all of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Sharon, Gibryl, Zoltan, Samuel, David, Neviah, and Noah Livingston; brothers, Jerry (Gale) Thornton of Columbus, OH and Mark Thornton of Charlotte, NC; sister, Rebecca Thornton of Columbus, OH; Partner, Tabitha Johnson; and children in love, Temyah, Tonzaih, Tirena, Tyson, and Talia, all of Columbus, OH; along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends.
