Sarah Justeen Harmon, age 102, passed away peacefully at her residence in Blacklick, Ohio on February 16, 2025.
Sarah was born on December 6, 1922, in Franklin County, VA, to the Late John Helm and the Late Lartha Ann Calloway. She also preceded in death, by her husband, James W. Harmon, Sr, her granddaughter, Tonya Harmon Jones, and her great grandson, Donte Curtis, her sisters, Helena Johnson, Frances Thomas, and Joyce Ford, and her brothers, John W. Helm and Charlie Helms. She is survived by her sisters, Tommy Jane Hayden, Georgia Gilmore, and Emma Kate Moore, and her brothers, Rufus Helms, Ronnie Helms, and Buddy Helms. She is survived, by her children, Marva Y. Johnson, James W. Harmon, Jr (Izetta), Darlene H. McClung, Donald S. Harmon (Paula), Michael K. Harmon (Kristy). She is survived by her grandchildren, Justina S. Harmon, Dawn A. Dunn (Dalyn), Kevin Spears (Fonda), Tammy L. Harmon, Kimberly D. Curtis, Charles Garland (Manuela), Shana N. Jackson (Melvin), Sharyn R. Gitonga (Ephraim), Anthony J. Harmon (Vera), Rashaad C. Harmon, and Alyxzandra R. Lande (Joe), and a host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, great great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Sarah grew up in Winding Gulf, WV, where she met and married James W. Harmon, Sr. They moved to Rand, WV, where she and James, Sr raised their five children. Sarah was known to be a fierce pitcher for the Rand Rockets women’s softball team. In 1961, she and her family moved to Columbus, Ohio.
Sarah was a cosmetologist by profession, graduating from the Madame CJ Walker School of Cosmetology, and held a current cosmetology license and had clients well into her 80s. She also retired from Columbus and Southern Electric Company (now AEP), in 1981.
Sarah was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, serving in the Nurses Corp (also serving as President), the Pastor’s Service Club (the oldest member), and the Producer of the Lord’s Supper Pageant for 35 years. She was also an active member of the Sassyettes, the Zodiac Club, and was an avid bowler well into her 90s. Sarah loved to play Bid Whist and played Spades with her family until she was 101 years old. Sarah was well known for her cooking and baking, especially the Strawberry Cobbler, Chow Chow, and Souse. She was tremendously loved by many throughout the generations and will be cherished with the fondest memories of her love for her family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am with a Funeral Service immediately following at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 2188 Woodward Ave, Columbus, OH 43219. Burial will process to Forest Lawn Memorial Garden, Columbus, Ohio.
