SARITA DENISE BOYD, known affectionately as “Rita,” was born on Tuesday, March 30, 1965, in Columbus, Ohio, and passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.
Sarita’s journey led her to graduate from The Ohio State University, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. Sarita embarked on her teaching career within the Columbus Public School System January 1989, leaving a positive impact on her students until her unfortunate diagnosis of Huntington’s disease.
She was a passionate educator who made a difference in the lives of countless children. In addition to teaching, Sarita advised the “Ladies of the Future” program at Moler Elementary School.
Sarita’s involvement extended beyond education. She was a staunch advocate for African American studies and was dedicated to raising awareness through her active participation in various committees. Sarita also shared her talents beyond the classroom, contributing to her church, Mt. Olivet, as a Vacation Bible School teacher and volunteered in serving in the Hunger Outreach program. Sarita’s life was marked by her unending love and dedication to her family, friends, and community.
Her hobbies included modeling with Sugar and Spice Models, Voszi Designs, Nora Musu Designs, and local fashion shows. Sarita’s vibrant spirit was evident on the dance floor where she enjoyed different types of dancing.
Sarita’s smile was infectious, a reflection of her boundless love for life and the people around her. Though her journey was not without challenges, Sarita’s unwavering strength and resilience served as an inspiration to all who knew her.
Sarita Denise Boyd’s memory will forever be cherished by those fortunate enough to have known her. Her love, dedication, and electrifying smile will continue to light up the lives of those she touched. She was preceded in death by her father, William Thomas; sister, Sonya Lynn Caldwell; and her paternal grandparents, David and Minnie Lee Thomas; as well as her maternal grandparents, Jesse and Jessie Bell Cross.
Sarita’s legacy lives on through her beloved daughter and caregiver, Shayla Aaliyah Boyd; mother, Agnes Adel Thomas; brother-in-law, Steven Crane Caldwell; nieces, Imani Nicole Caldwell and Nia Cherise Caldwell; uncle, Neal (Robin) Cross; special cousins, Neal Edward Cross Jr. and Daria Cross; her lifelong friend, Monta (Greg) Williams; godsons, Derrick J. Smith Jr. and Tyler A. Williams, who held a special place in her heart; and a host of other family and special friends.
