Simon Earnest Carruthers

Simon Earnest Carruthers was born on August 29, 1939 in Atoka, Tennessee. He passed away on July 18, 2017. Simon was the seventh of twelve children of his mother, Betty Boyd Carruthers, and father, Simon Anderson Carruthers. Simon spent most of his adult life in Columbus, Ohio. He was worked in various capacities at Marzetti Restaurant and Grandle Parking. Ultimately, he became a transit operator at Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA), where he was employed for 27 years before retiring in 2005. While at COTA, he served as recording secretary for the Transport Workers Union, Local 208. Simon had a great smile, and a warm, outgoing personality. He never met a stranger, and made you feel like family when you met him. After retirement, he liked to frequent White Castle, which he called “his other office,” to visit with friends and shoot the breeze. In addition to his parents, Simon is preceded in death by his son Dwayne E. Carruthers, brother Freddie Holiday, and sisters, Bessie Turner, Annie Ruff, Lorine Fletcher, and Shirley Carruthers. He leaves to cherish his memories, his daughters, Judy (Duane) Marbury, Brenda (Ronald) Jackson, and Cynthia (David) Nickell; son Simon Carruthers, II (Tasha); sisters, Rosie Shaw, Prudence Oliver, Darlene (Mayo) Saxton, Verdie Maynus, and Betty Pinkney; brother Walter (Linda) Carruthers; Shannon Foster (brother, cousin, very close friend); special friend Janet Moore; ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
