Steve Cornelius Champion was born May 26, 1944 in Columbus, Ohio, where he graduated from East High School. During his enlistment with the United States Air Force, Steve was stationed at Travis Air Force Base, in California, and received an honorable discharge from active duty service as a Staff Sergeant in 1969. He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. Steve later worked as a certified electrician and retired from the United States Postal Service after many dedicated years as a Letter Carrier. On August 12, 2017, at the age of 73, Steve passed away while at Grant Medical Center in Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Champion and Lydia Bright Champion, brother Gary Champion, and grandfather Bishop Clarence Bright of Shelbyville, Tennessee. Steve is survived by his children, Laretha Champion and Steven Champion; siblings, Dr. Charles Champion, Jerry Champion, Cynthia Champion Tucker, Teresea Champion, and Willie Martin; nephews, Daniel Tucker, Shawn Patterson, Joseph Champion, and Gary Champion, Jr.; nieces, Dr. Charita Champion Brookins and Dr. Carol “Cookie” Champion; and a host of other relatives and friends.
