Thelma Lee Jemison Givens, age 84, went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Grant Medical Center. Thelma earned two degrees from The Ohio State University. Her professional calling was fulfilled as a teacher, and later as an administrator with Columbus Public Schools. She retired from this post in 1985. As a world traveler Thelma visited England, France, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Thailand, Bermuda, Australia, to name a few. She also studied at Columbia and Notre Dame. Thelma was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society. She loved the English language, history, Broadway musicals, and nature. Throughout her life she was an avid reader with a lifetime love for learning. Predeceased by parents Henry L. and Emma C. Jemison; sister Erma (Chester) Mayo; nephew Michael Mayo and son-in-law Harlin Goins. Survived by loving daughter, Sylvia Givens-Moore; granddaughter, Gabrielle Moore; sisters, Mary Delores Goins, and Barbara (Richard) Kelsey; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
