Thomas, the fifth of six children, was born in Greenup, Kentucky, on June 21, 1924 to Frank and Gerrie Crump. As a young boy, he became a member and was baptized at the St. John A.M.E. Methodist Church in Greenup. On May 29, 1943, Tom graduated from Booker T. Washington H.S., where he played on the basketball team that was the Eastern Kentucky District Champions and runner up in the 1943 Kentucky State High School basketball tournament. In the same year he joined the U.S. Marine Corp. where he served in WWII and was honorably discharged on July 2, 1946. On February 1, 1947, Tom was united in marriage to the late F. Jean Crump. Out of that union were born four daughters: Sheila, Deborah, Jacquelyn, and Annette. After more than 52 years of marriage, Jean went home to be with the Lord. Brother Crump joined the Oakley Avenue Baptist Church on May 3, 1959 and was baptized by the late Rev. Jacob J. Ashburn, Jr. He dearly loved his church and served as Chief Usher for many, many years and remained dedicated and active in the church (now Oakley Full Gospel Baptist Church) until his health restricted him. Brother Crump was a warm, loving, and caring person, whose life touched many and will be greatly missed. He had a laugh that was contagious. One of his nieces said “when Uncle Tommy laughed, he bubbled all over”. Tom retired from Anheuser-Busch in 1990. He was proud of the fact that he was instrumental in starting the credit union at the Columbus location, and in his later years, proudly reminded the credit union staff whenever he went to conduct business. In June 2004, Tom and Jean Hassel were married, bringing together two loving families. In addition to his family, gardening was one of Tom’s greatest joys. He gardened on his Plain City property for 50 years, supplying his family with lots of fresh vegetables. Brother Crump quietly entered into eternal rest Thursday, January 22, 2015, at the First Community Village. He was preceded in death by wife Fairy Jean, daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and J. Benjamin Caldwell, granddaughter, Stephanie Simmons, parents Frank and Gerrie Crump, sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Enoch Ramsey, sisters, Ann Hill and Lenora Crump, brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Alice Crump, brother Sturgis Crump, and step-son Larry Ginn. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife of 10 years, Jean; daughters, Sheila (Isaac) Day, Jacquelyn Crump, Annette (George III) Ware; step-daughters, Karen (Donald) McDaniel, and Cathy (Walter) Hunt; step-son, Max (Diane) Ginn; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
