Vernita Gomer

Vernita Gomer departed this life on Saturday April 9, 2016 after a lengthy illness. She was born July 15, 1930 in St. Charles, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late Margaret and Freeman Hamilton. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Polly as she was so affectionately called graduated from J. W. Million High School and attended Kentucky State University. Vernita left Kentucky and moved to Columbus, Ohio where she met and joined in marriage to the late Loring Gomer, to that union one beautiful baby girl was born; whom they named Renita. She later decided to try her hand at being a Hair Stylist and in 1964 graduated from Poro School of Cosmetology. For those of you who new Polly, you can just imagine, when it was time for her daughter to attend school; well it was time for Polly to get involved with the Columbus City School System. She volunteered at first, but later became an Instructional Aide. She retired from the Columbus City School System after working 30 plus years. One might say she worked two jobs, because she was also secretary for the families business, Gomer’s Blacktop Sealing. She was a member of Barnett Road Baptist Church where she served in the Food Pantry Ministry and as a Sunday School Teacher. She worked faithfully until her health prevented her from doing so. She was a member of the Cups and Saucers Social Club and the Tuskegee Airman, Inc., Ohio Memorial Chapter. Vernita was preceded in death by her parents, Freeman and Margaret Hamilton, brothers Howard and Harry Hamilton, and loving husband Loring Gomer. She leaves to cherish her memories her devoted daughter Renita (Christopher) Peck; brother, William (Twonia) Hamilton; adopted sister and best friend, Jackie Sims-Marbrey; cousins, Charlene, Charles Jr, and Dana Michael Gomer; cousin Joyce( Billy) Via; “adopted” children, Andre Sanders, Kimberly Gales and Cinnamom Pipkin, Other family members including her church family and friends.
