Virdie Lee “Nimba” Reed was born on January 18, 1930 in Heflin, Alabama to Myrtle Stephen West and Rudy West. At a very young age, Virdie was faced with the responsibility of raising her siblings after the death of their mother. She later married Earnest “Pie” Reed and relocated to Columbus, Ohio, where they raised their own children, two girls and three boys. Virdie was an employee of Mercy Hospital for over 25 years prior to retirement. She was also a foster parent for 21 years. Having children in her home always made her feel that she had a part in helping to rear more young people. She was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Missionary Church, where she served on the Mother Board. She loved her church family. Virdie “Nimba” Reed went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 4, 2010. She was preceded in death by three children, Earnest “Pepper” Reed, Jr., Abigail Reed, and Henry “Cookie” Reed, as well as her former husband Earnest L. Reed, Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter Yvonne (Dewey) Daniels, and a son Bernard (Sue) Reed; five grandchildren, Andre’ (Liane) Reed, B.J. Reed, Jr., Naomi Reed, Amon Lance Reed, and Kenyutta Hunter; three great grandchildren, She’lynn, Andre’ Jr., and Lance Jr.; two brothers James (Mary) West and John (Mary) West; two sisters Josephine Hayes and Etta Sams; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
