Vivian Lee Sturgis, of Columbus, Ohio passed away peacefully at her home on December 22, 2023.
She was born in Jamaica Queens, New York, April 9, 1941, to Edward Brooks and Patricia Brooks (Baker). Vivian graduated from New York Founding Hospital School of Infant Care Technicians and received a bachelor's degree in child psychology from the College of New Rochelle. Vivian married Walter Cates and settled in Columbus to raise her family. She spent several years doing prison reform work and retired ODJFS. Vivian was a dedicated member of Faith Ministries Church receiving a certificate of theological studies in . Vivian was part of the music ministry and served as a reverend at Faith Ministries Church.
Vivian was a true caretaker and was fondly referred to as "mom" by her son's friends. She was a woman of faith who believed in the power of prayer. She always had a word of encouragement for anyone in need. She will be dearly missed.
Vivian is predeceased in death by her parents, husband, Walter Cates, son, Spencer Sturgis and sister, Gwendolyn Brooks,
She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Preston Sturgis, Jason (Bessie) Sturgis, and Walter Sturgis, beloved brother Alfred Brooks, grandchildren Kathy Sturgis, Danielle (Adrian) Moore, Christine (Troy) Williams, Michelle (Shane) Hicks, Charity (Kevin) Hall, Nyle Sturgis, Jordan Sturgis, Jersey Sturgis, Justin Sturgis, and Elijah Sturgis, a host of great grandchildren nieces, nephews beloved cousins and dear friends.
