Washington Mackey Smith, Jr. was born August 22, 1928 to Violet Lattimer Smith and Washington M. Smith, Sr. in Columbus, Ohio. As a child, Washington began his formal education in the Columbus Public Schools, where he attended Pilgrim Elementary School and Champion Junior High School. He graduated from the University School and continued his academic pursuits at Ohio University, in Athens, and The Ohio State University. He met Phyllis A. Bruce and on January 2, 1949, they were united in marriage. Two beautiful daughters, June Anne and Janice, were born to this union. Washington had previously managed Vi's Market during his youth; however, in 1955, he founded the Smith and Bruce Excavating Company, which operated for 50 years. Additionally, he was a 50-year member of Union Grove Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for 25 years. On Saturday, January 21, 2012, Washington passed away at the age of 83. His parents preceded him in death. Left to cherish memories of Washington are his loving wife Phyllis B. Smith; daughters June S. Horne and Janice Smith Boyd (Delton Sr.); sister Constance S. McVoy; brothers Rudolph (Joyce) Smith and Donald B. (Margaret) Smith; 5 grandchildren, Christine D. (Vernon) Sledge, Michelle A. (Gregory) Wells, Delton D. Boyd, Jr., Dionne A. Boyd, and Devon E. Boyd; 6 great grandchildren, Erianna L. Warrior, Chelsea D. Warrior, Aisley R. Wells, Delton D. Boyd, III, Taryn L. Boyd, and Laryn Boyd; and a host of other relatives and friends.
