Wendell LaVerne Sanders, often called Weebs, passed suddenly on Thursday, September 22, 2022. He was blessed with four children during the time of his marriage to Amy K. Sanders. His wonderful daughters Lydia Kathleen (25), Melita LaVerne (21) and Abigail Turner (19) were always the joy in his life. For each one he had a nickname and a song, created and sang just for them. Wendell is survived by his daughters and is preceded in death by his first child, new-born son Jansen Turner and his father Charlie Sanders Jr.
He is also survived in this life by his mother, Theodora Costella Sanders, age 92, she nicknamed him Gumpy gip and began the tradition of a special name and song; we still ask the songs question “Who is the Gumpy gip”. He is also survived by his oldest sibling, Charlene A. Grant; sister, Regenia F. Sanders; only brother Rodney P. (Deborah) Sanders -who was born on the same day, November 20th, seven years his senior; sister, Sheryl D. Sanders, and sister-in-law, Marcia Conley. Wendell leaves a host of loved ones: nieces, nephews, god children, cousins, and dear friends who will remember him always with a smile and a happy thought.
Wendell knew and loved the Lord with all his heart; from a little boy he sang, directed choirs and served faithfully in 2 local churches: Greater Twelfth Missionary Baptist Church and St. John AME Church.
If you knew him, you also knew he loved the Dallas Cowboys, his infant baby girl’s first size one sweatsuit onesie bore the Cowboy logo. Professionally, Wendell was a very accomplished IT professional, holding positions with Ross Labs, IBM and JPMorgan Chase , all in the Columbus Ohio area. He cared about people; dedicating time each year to the setup, break-down and success of the Columbus marathon. A Christian and A Father, A Friend and A Brother, A Foodie and A Sharp dresser; he was a force to be reckoned with and depended on. He is loved and now missed by all.
