William Mason

December 14, 1937 — September 13, 2023

Bill Mason was born December 14, 1937 to the late Maxwell Mason and JoAnn Freeman. On September 13, 2023 Bill passed away peacefully at home. Bill, attended Port Jefferson High School in New York and moved to Ohio in his late 30’s. Bill worked several years with Pepsi Bottling as well as a few other local bottling companies, delivering to many local stores and chain groceries around Columbus. He was a facilities engineer for Ohio Weslyn, Ohio State University and retired as a supervisor of facilities from Columbus State Community College in 2002.

Everyone who knew Bill, knew he was a serious bowler for over 50 years. He was a member of many bowling associations over his bowling career like ABC, USBC and the 700 Bowling Clubs of America. Bill had many 300 games to his list of achievements as well as several 700 and 800 series. Many have doubted the bowling achievements Bill had been awarded, so he often had to bring in his awards and collection of over 21 rings for his 300 and 800 games to prove his many achievements. Bill was inducted into the Local Bowlers Hall of Fame July 24, 2011.

He was truly that deal when it came to bowling. What a legacy to leave us with. Piketon, Aero lanes, Amos Lanes, Eastland Lanes, Main Lanes and Holiday Lanes were all home to Bill. He was a true fixture in these bowling centers daily. He loved catching up with friends and showing off his skills which seem to come so easy to him. He was passionate about bowling and even agreed to travel with teammates to Reno Nevada.

He had fond memories of that trip and often told stories of his unattended bags nearly closing down the airport. Bill, was a loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with the family during the holidays and playing the pac-man game with his son-in-law Steven. That pac-man game still has his high score.

Bill, is preceded in death by his parents, Maxwell Mason and JoAnn Freeman, brother Clarence Mason and former wife Metancy Mason. He leaves the following family members to cherish his memory daughters Tancy MasonPhillips (Steven) and Amanda Smalley, granddaughters Tancy Da-vina Mason, Jay’da Turner and Jessica Phillips, niece Tammy (Melvin) Brothers and extended family as well as a host of extended bowling family & friends. The family wanted to send a truly heart felt thank you to Holiday Lanes staff & members, DaVita Dialysis (Canal Winchester- staff), Patricia Tolbert Palliative Care Ohio Health and the extended Ohio Health Hospice team for your care and compassion didn’t go unnoticed.

The speed of the ball defines the strength of the bowler.
